Fog and Smoke

Fog, and in bad years, smoke, have a similar reductive effect as snow and ice, reducing the world to shape and suggestion, to nuance and mystery. We are no strangers to fog here in San Francisco, but many of these pictures were taken over the past year or so in other locations...in particular, from atop Mt Diablo at dawn.

Smoke is similar but different, bringing with it a sinister suggestion of disaster somewhere nearby. On September 9, 2020, we awoke to haunting mustard colored light, smoke blown in from the massive wildfires that were ranging across the state. At noon, the street lights were on and you needed a lamp to read by. A week later, in Tahoe, it was a similar scene...an ominous warning of apocalypse from the future.
